Pickleball: Does Power Really Matter?

Many beginners assume that hitting the ball harder gives them an advantage. However, power alone is not the key to success in pickleball.

When Power Can Help:

  • Smash Shots: If the ball is high and near the net, a powerful smash can end the rally immediately.
  • Deep Serves and Returns: Adding some power to your serve can make it harder for your opponent to control their return.

When Power Doesn’t Work:

  • During Kitchen Play: The goal here is finesse, not force. Powerful shots in the kitchen can backfire, sending the ball out of bounds.
  • Against Experienced Players: Skilled players know how to use your power against you, redirecting fast shots into controlled dinks.

The real secret lies in combining power with strategy. By knowing when to go for a powerful shot and when to use finesse, you’ll become a more well-rounded player.
