Ah, pickleball—what a game! Whether you’re just hearing about it or have been curious for a while, let me tell you: it’s never too late to jump in. I’m living proof of that! As someone who found pickleball a little later in life, I can confidently say that it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made. Not only does it keep me active, but I’ve also met some of the most wonderful people on the court. If you’re thinking about giving it a try, here are 10 tips to help you get started and feel prepared for your first game!

1. Get the Right Gear
You don’t need much, but a good paddle can make a difference. Start with a beginner paddle that’s lightweight and comfortable to hold. Don’t forget to grab some pickleballs, and if you’re playing outside, go for the ones made for outdoor use (they’re sturdier and have larger holes).

2. Wear Comfortable Shoes
I can’t stress this enough—proper footwear is key! Look for court shoes with good support and non-marking soles. You’ll be moving around a lot, so it’s important to keep those feet comfortable and steady. Trust me, you don’t want to be sidelined with sore feet!

3. Warm Up Your Body
This isn’t a sprint, but you do want to be limber. Take five to ten minutes before you play to stretch and do a little walking. Focus on your shoulders, wrists, and legs. This will help prevent injury and get you moving a little easier when the game starts.

4. Learn the Basic Rules
The rules of pickleball are pretty simple, but it helps to know them before you step on the court. The basics: serve underhand, the ball has to bounce once on each side before anyone can volley, and games go to 11 points (win by 2). Spend some time reading up or watching a quick video—it’ll make your first game less confusing.

5. Find a Local Group or Court
One of the best things about pickleball is the community. Check out local recreation centers or senior groups that offer lessons or open play. Don’t be afraid to ask around or jump in—I’ve found most players to be welcoming, and they’re usually excited to see someone new giving it a go.
